Reading the Weather Window Before a Day Trip

Six day trips, forty two forecast readings, and a written ruleset for deciding the night before whether tomorrow can hold the plan.

Every day trip starts with the same call: leave tomorrow morning, or push the plan to another day. For years I made that call from an app icon, a tiny sun or cloud checked five days out. The icon failed often enough that I stopped trusting forecasts at all, which turned out to be its own mistake.

This trial replaced the icon with a written ruleset. It fixes the horizons at which a forecast earns trust, sets numeric thresholds for wind and rain, and forces a decision at two set times. I ran the rules against six day trips out of Boise between mid May and mid June, and I logged every forecast reading along the way.

The core source was not an app. It was the forecast discussion, the plain text briefing that National Weather Service forecasters publish for each region several times a day. Reading one takes about ten minutes, and it changes what every number in the graphical forecast actually means.

The ruleset

The rules fit on an index card, which was the point. A method I cannot recall at 9 pm on a Tuesday is not a method, it is homework.

Trust horizons came first. Beyond five days, I treat a forecast as a planning rumor: useful for blocking out a candidate day, useless for details. At three to four days, I trust the shape of the day, meaning the broad pattern of morning, afternoon, and evening. At 36 hours, I make the commit decision and set gear, food, and a start time. On the morning itself I allow exactly one change, the start time, never the destination.

Thresholds came second, and I wrote them for my own routes rather than for some universal traveler. For exposed foothill and ridge walks, sustained wind above 20 mph or gusts above 30 mph means no. Between 12 and 20 mph I keep the day but pick a sheltered route instead. For rain I read two numbers together: the probability of precipitation inside my window and the expected amount. Probability above 50 percent with amounts above a tenth of an inch moves the day. Probability under 30 percent means go, with a rain shell stuffed in the pack. Any mention of afternoon thunderstorms in the discussion sets a hard turnaround: back at the car by 1 pm.

The decision itself is a three column check at 36 hours: wind, rain, thunder. Each column scores green, yellow, or red against the thresholds above. Two greens and a yellow means go, with the yellow written down next to a specific mitigation. Any red means the day moves. Writing the mitigation matters, because a yellow I cannot mitigate on paper is a red I am negotiating with.

Field notes from six windows

Window one, May 20, was a foothills loop north of town. The five day icon showed rain, and the old version of me would have canceled on the spot. The discussion, read at three days, described a fast moving system clearing overnight, and the 36 hour check came up all green. The day held: light wind, dry trail, high clouds burning off by noon.

Window two, May 27, taught me what probability of precipitation actually is. The table said 40 percent for my afternoon, which I had always read as a coin flip on a ruined day. The discussion framed it as scattered showers with small footprints and short duration. I went. It rained for 25 minutes while I ate lunch under a cottonwood, then cleared completely.

Window three, June 4, was the wind test. The point forecast gave gusts to 24 mph, a yellow by my card. The discussion added a line about ridgeline gusts near 30 by early afternoon. My written mitigation moved the start from 9 am to 7 am and reversed the loop to finish low. The first strong gust arrived at 1:40 pm, and by then I stood 400 feet below the ridge.

Windows four and five, June 6 and June 9, were quiet greens that earn one sentence each. Both days verified almost exactly as forecast. Boring is what a working system feels like from the inside.

What broke

Three failures showed up in the log: one mine, one the tooling's, one the atmosphere's.

Mine first: I had misread coverage as certainty for years. A 40 percent probability over a mountain zone often means showers will cover about 40 percent of the area, not that rain will fall on me for 40 percent of the day. The discussion states this plainly in words. The icon never does, because an icon has no room for the word scattered.

The tooling failure is the icon itself. One symbol compresses 16 daytime hours, so a dry morning with a wet evening renders the same as a soaked day. Four of my six windows lived inside days whose icons looked marginal or worse. The hourly table, checked at 36 hours, is the honest version of the same data.

The atmospheric failure was window six. The discussion flagged thunderstorms developing after 3 pm, and my check treated that timing as firm. The first cell fired at 11:20 am, nearly four hours early. I was 40 minutes from the trailhead when the sky turned, and I walked out in light rain with the thunder still well south of me. The correction went straight onto the card: convection timing is a range, not an appointment, so any mention of thunder now pulls the turnaround two hours earlier.

The log in numbers

I logged 42 forecast readings across 31 days, each one a row with the horizon, the numbers, and what actually happened.

At five or more days out, the eventual day matched the forecast character in 3 of 6 cases. That is close enough to a coin flip that I now refuse to cancel anything at that range. At three days, the shape of the day verified in 5 of 6 cases. At 36 hours, forecast wind landed within 5 mph of what I observed in 5 of 6 windows, and the precipitation window landed within two hours in 4 of 6.

The ruleset produced six go decisions and two moved days across eight candidates. Of the six goes, five held and one busted early. One of the two moved days turned out dry and pleasant, a false alarm I accept without complaint. A rule that never fires a false alarm will eventually walk you into weather.

The verdict

The ruleset stays on the card, and the icon app came off my home screen. Fixed horizons plus written thresholds beat instinct for me, mostly by preventing the early cancellations the five day icon used to trigger. The honest caveats: this covers one region I know well, in late spring, over six samples, which makes it a log, not a study. Convection defeats precise timing, so thunder days now carry an earlier turnaround by default. The forecast discussion also has a learning curve, and the vocabulary took me about two weeks of steady reading to absorb. Pay that cost once. After it, ten minutes of plain text the night before will tell you more than any icon ever has.
